I know that the thought of this process is daunting and right now you want to shut the computer and run far far away. BUT I am here to give you tips on helping to make this task less overwhelming and stressful.
Moving to a new home is exciting, and exploring new territories exhilarating, but the process to get there can for sure cause apprehension. Having recently moved (NJ to SC), I was able to pack my entire home by myself and manage to keep my sanity and some hairs on my head.
Step 1: Get Organized! I know you are thinking “well you are an Organizer and this is obvious and easy for you.” Actually it is easy for everyone. You need to go room by room and within each room go closet by closet and drawer by drawer. First, quickly eliminate anything you no longer want or need and donate or trash. Now you are left with everything you want, use and love and will need in your new home.
Step 2: Estimate how many boxes you think you will need for each room. Your local box supply store can help you with box sizing. For reference, the XL boxes are great for bulky bedding and pillows. The LG boxes are great for clothing, lamps and appliances. The MD boxes are my best friend! They will fit kitchen items, office supplies and toys. The SM boxes are perfect for books and bathroom necessities. These items can get heavy and a small box will help reduce the weight.
Step 3: Order boxes, packing paper, packing tape, label markers, bubble wrap, plate sleeves and any other packing supplies that make you happy.
Step 4: Start room by room and try to stick to the “theme” of the space. Do not mix office with kitchen or bathroom with toy room etc. Once a room is complete, move on to the next one.
Label every box first by Room then by key Contents. For example: Kitchen/Glasses/Plates. Office/Files/Desk Decor.
If there is space in the box, use towels, pillows and other soft items as fillers. You do not want to be able to push the top of the box when filled more than 1/2″ or you risk crushing.
Packing paper vs bubble wrap? Personal preference. I find paper easier to use because you can wrap faster and paper is less bulky. Bubble wrap is great for high end glass/ceramic items to help reduce the risk of breakage.
Many more tips to be had but these are the main ones to help make a dent in your project. If additional assistance is needed, call on a Professional Organizer who would be happy to help “move” you on your way.
